Can the Bears Find Free Agents to Help Leonard Floyd?

By Adewale Apata

Ryan Pace decided that Willie Young and Pernell McPhee were too old, injured and expensive, so he released them to accumulate more salary cap space.  According to Over The Cap, Ryan Pace will have over $77 million dollars in cap space to spend after Mike Glennon is released.  The problem with that is; talented, healthy and young edge rushers rarely avoid that franchise tag.  Free agent sack artist Ziggy Ansah from the Lions and Demarcus Lawrence from the Cowboys both received franchise tags and won’t hit free agency.

2016 9th overall Bears draft pick Leonard Floyd is an emerging edge rusher to build around.  He has contributed with 11.5 sacks in 22 regular season games.  However, his durability will be questioned since he missed 10 games in his 1st two seasons due to a concussion and neck injury in 2016 and sprained MCL and PCL in 2017.

Sam Acho is an unrestricted free agent that the Bears should bring back to provide veteran leadership off the bench.  Lamar Houston is also an unrestricted free agent but the Bears are unlikely to re-sign the injury prone 30 year old vet.  Isaiah Irving is coming off his rookie year as an undrafted free agent and showed some promise in the 2017 preseason with 3 sacks.

But the Bears brain trust has got to find Floyd much more reliable long term help on his opposite side.  Unfortunately, this year’s edge rusher free agent class is so bleak, Pace may want to seriously think about bringing back Pernell McPhee or Willie Young.  If not, he may have to get creative with a trade. Don’t be surprised if the Bears draft 2 OLBs and never rule out the possibility of Ryan Pace signing a salary cap casualty during training camp or the preseason.

Will the Bears Replace Josh Sitton Through Free Agency?

By Adewale Apata

Apparently, Ryan Pace thinks Josh Sitton was too old and expensive.  He released the soon to be 32 year old (June 6th) and saved just over $8 Million in salary cap space.  The problem with that is; according to Pro Football Focus (PFF) Josh Sitton was the Bears best offensive lineman.  3-time Pro Bowler Kyle Long has been ravished by injuries in his last couple seasons and Bear fans can only hope that his injury woes are behind him.  The 2-year pro Cody Whitehair is a natural guard but has been forced to play center due to the injured or ineffective Hroniss Grasu.  Grasu has the look of a 2015 3rd round draft miss by Ryan Pace.  He’ll have a tough time surviving roster cuts during training camp.  Another option at guard is soon to be 29 year old (May 10th) Jack of All Trades O-lineman Tom Compton.  He’s a offensive tackle who started 5 games at guard for the Bears last season but he is just a ‘next man up’ kind of guy and an unrestricted free agent.

The release of Sitton implies that Pace believes in 28 year old backup guard/center Eric Kush.  Kush played solid in his 4 starts in 2016 while filling in for the injured Kyle Long but he tore a hamstring in training camp which kept him out for the entire 2017 season.  Jordan Morgan is an intriguing backup guard for the Bears.  He was a 2017 5th round pick from little known Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and He practically red-shirted his rookie year as he was placed on injured reserve due to shoulder surgery.  Chicago is hoping that Morgan is a diamond in the rough but Pace must try and write a huge check to an interior offensive lineman during free agency.  There are 2 unrestricted free agent offensive linemen that Pace must pursue in order to fulfill that hole he created when he released Josh Sitton.

bengalswire.usatoday.com

#1) Andrew Norwell Carolina PanthersDuring the 2014 draft, Norwell never heard his name called.  He signed to the Panthers as an undrafted free agent, survived roster cuts, took over the starting left guard position and has held it down ever since.  Andrew Norwell continues to ascend as he was voted 1st Team All-Pro by the Associated Press and Pro Football Focus for the 2017 season and he’s only 26 years old.  It’s a no brainer, Ryan Pace has to put forth maximum effort to get Andrew Norwell into a Bears uniform.  If Pace pulls this off, he’ll look like a genius for replacing Sitton for a player who is younger and better.

baltimoreravens.com

#2)Ryan Jensen Baltimore Ravens – If the Bears are unable to score big with Andrew Norwell, Jensen should be next in line.  Ryan Jensen played his 1st 3 seasons as a reserve guard but changed his position to center last season and started all 16 games for the Ravens.  According to Pro Football Focus, Jensen was the 9th best center in the NFL last year, which is 2 spots above Cody Whitehair.  Whitehair was drafted to play guard, so plugging Jensen in at the center position would be a solid solution to the Bear’s O-Line puzzle.  Ryan Jensen would also be a long term solution; he turns 27 on May 27th.

Will the Bears find a Challenger or Replacement for Mitch Unrein via Free Agency?

Akiem Hicks was one of the biggest Pro Bowl snubs last season and Eddie Goldman is a Solid 24 year old nose tackle who should hold down that position for several years.  However, 2016 3rd round pick Jonathan Bullard has been underwhelming off the bench.  He’s trying to avoid the label of being a draft miss by Ryan Pace next season.

Roy Robertson-Harris is an intriguing player who was a 2016 undrafted rookie free agent and initially signed on to play outside linebacker.  Unfortunately, a heat illness kept him out for the 2016 season.  Before the 2017 season, he put on 40 pounds and changed his position to defensive lineman.  With his high motor at 6’7” 295 lbs, he has the potential to replace unrestricted free agent Mitch Unrein.  If Pace is not totally sold that Bullard or Robertson-Harris can become solid starters, he must search through free agency before the draft begins.  Which unrestricted free agents can replace Mitch Unrein or challenge him for his starting position?  There’s only one guy worth negotiating with.

profootballtalk.nbcsports.com

Sheldon Richardson Seattle Seahawks – This 27 year old, 5 year pro had an incredible 2 and a half year start to his NFL career.  In 2013, he earned the Associated Press defensive rookie of the year and he had no sophomore slump as he was selected to the 2014 pro bowl.  In the first 10 games of his 3rd season, he continued to build on his success with 5 sacks but a hamstring injury kept him out and ineffective for the rest of the 2015 season.

After a mediocre 2016 season, the Jets traded Richardson to the Seahawks for WR Jermaine Kearse and a 2nd round pick.  In Seattle, he did not return to his Pro Bowl form with 27 tackles and only 1 sack.  However, Sheldon Richardson is still young and Ryan Pace could give him a 1 year ‘prove it’ deal to see if he can resurrect under Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defensive scheme.  If the Bears decide not to take a chance on him, they should definitely re-sign Mitch Unrein and gamble on Bullard and Robertson-Harris as legitimate challengers to that 3rd starting defensive line position to compliment Goldman and Hicks.  April’s NFL draft may also provide a solution but the Bears have major holes at WR, OLB, OL and CB.

Are the Bears Offensive Tackles as Bad as You Think?

beargoggleson.com

By Adewale Apata

Bobby Massie and Charles Leno Jr takes a plethora of heat from several mainstream Chicago media guys but do they really deserve the constant criticism?  There’s one quality about Massie and Leno Jr that their haters cannot deny and that’s durability.  Since Leno Jr took over the starting left tackle position in week 4 of 2015, he has not missed a start and Massie has only missed 4 games in the last 4 seasons.  That’s saying a lot for a team that is use to digging deep on their depth chart due to terrible luck in the injury department.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Charles Leno Jr is much better than most Bear fans think.  PFF ranked him as the 15th best out of the 64 starting tackles in the NFL for the 2017 season.  The Bears were 11th in the league in rushing yards per attempt and in the middle of the pack at 17th in the NFL in sacks allowed per game with Mike Glennon and a rookie QB.  The Bears organization clearly does not believe the hate for Charles Leno Jr is warranted.  They signed the 26 year old to a 4 year contract extension before the 2017 season that runs through the 2021 season.  However, gripes Bobby Massie is justifiable as he is the 39th ranked offensive tackle on that PFF list.  Leno Jr is not going anywhere but are there any unrestricted free agent offensive tackles that can replace Bobby Massie?  There’s only one guy that may get some consideration from Ryan Pace.

bostonherald.com

Nate Solder New England Patriots– He has started the last 7 years for the Patriots and the soon to be 30 year old (April 12th) has contributed to an offensive line unit that has kept Tom Brady clean over the years but Pro Football Focus ranks him as the 32nd best offensive tackle in the NFL.  Plus signing Solder would create complications for the Bears offensive line structure because he has played left tackle his entire career, which is the same position Charles Leno Jr plays.

Bear fans can forget about Massie being replaced this off-season through free agency.  However; since Massie will be a free agent after the 2018 season and Bears backup swing tackle Tom Compton is an unrestricted free agent, Pace will search for his backup and/or replacement through the draft.

No Top 5 Pick for the Bulls, No Problem

In my previous article ‘Bulls Race to the Bottom’, I revealed the top five 2018 NBA draft prospect: #5 Trae Young, #4 Michael Porter Jr., #3 Luka Doncic, #2 Marvin Bagley III and #1 Deandre Ayton.  However, March Madness is right around the corner and there’s 7 other players with an opportunity to increase their stock enough to be considered to be a top 5 pick.

Bears Need Another Edge Rusher

Everybody and they mama knows the Bears biggest need this off-season is wide receiver.  Bear fans are going to constantly hear about how bad their current crop of WRs are and how to rectify the problem through free agency and/or the draft.  But not in this article.

It’s time to focus on another position of need, which is Outside Linebacker/ Edge Rusher.  Leonard Floyd looks to be a rising star, Pernell McPhee and Willie Young are solid vets but it has been difficult to keep these guys off the injured reserves list.  Lamar Houston has a high motor but has suffered a torn ACL injury twice within the last 3 seasons and he’s an unrestricted free agent.  Sam Acho provides depth but he’s not a game changer.

Ryan Pace has got to be looking deep into free agency which begins March 12th and the NFL draft which begins April 26th to address this need.  So, who are the impactful OLB/Edge rushers currently available in free agency?  There will be 2 pro bowl caliber unrestricted free agents out there, if they can avoid that franchise tag.

#2 DeMarcus Lawrence 6’3”, 251, 25 years old(4/2/92) – Lawrence just completed his 4th and best season of his career by finishing 2nd in the NFL in sacks with 14.5.  In his 2014 rookie season, he did not play much but he showed plenty of potential in 2015 under the tutelage of defensive coordinator Ron Marinelli by recording 8 sacks.  However, 2016 was a tumultuous season as he missed 7 games due to back surgery and a suspension for using amphetamines (usually used to treat depression and to decrease one’s appetite), which violated the league’s substance abuse policy.

He bounced back in a big way after having back surgery again before the start of the 2017 season and earned a 1st ballot pro bowl selection.  Lawrence is young and talented but has dealt with back issues.Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones is a big spending risk taking type of guy and you better believe that he’s going to open his wallet wide to keep a defensive edge rusher that keeps QBs on their backs.  Jones probably should franchise tag Lawrence to make him prove that his back issues are a thing of the past.  I’ll be shocked if Bear’s General Manager Ryan Pace steals Lawrence from the Cowboys.

#1 Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah 6’5”, 271, 28 years old (5/29/89) – The only negative thing I can say about this guy is that he played 13 games in 2016 and recorded only 2 sacks.  But guess what?  He suffered a high ankle sprain during week 2 of that season and decided to play through that injury rather than sitting out on the injured reserved list.  He proved his unfortunate 2016 season was just an aberration by finishing 8th in the NFL in sacks with 12 in 2017.  In 2015, he was 3rd in the league in sacks with 14.5.  Ryan Pace and Vic Fangio has got to team up, find Ziggy, sell that Bears top 10 defense and throw the bank at Ansah.  Starting edge rushers of Ansah and Leonard Floyd with vets Young and McPhee as backups would be ideal for Vic Fangio’s emerging defense.

But if Ryan Pace can’t score big on OLB’s in free agency, he’ll most definitely attempt to address their edge rusher need through the draft.  There’s 6 OLB/Edge Rushers with overall 1st round grades for the 2018 NFL Draft.

Player School Ht Wt Projected 1st Rd        Draft Position
1.      Bradley Chubb NC State 6’4” 275 3 – 6
2.      Tremaine Edmunds Virginia Tech 6’5” 250 6 – 13
3.      Arden Key LSU 6’5” 260 13 – 19
4.      Marcus Davenport UTSA 6’5” 260 19 – 23
5.      Harold Landry Boston College 6’3” 250 23 – 28
6.      Sam Hubbard OSU 6’5” 265 28 – 32

The only way Chicago can draft the projected best edge rusher Bradley Chubb is by trading up for the 3rd consecutive year in the 1st round.  Chubb is not falling to the Bears at pick #8.  However, there are 4 QB needy teams (Browns, Giants, Jets and Broncos) picking ahead of the Bears and dynamic RB Saquon Barkley is expected to be a top 5 overall pick.

Therefore, there’s a good chance the athletic OLB Tremaine Edmunds will be still available at the 8th slot.  NFL scouts are infatuated with his excellent size and speed combination and can’t wait to get a closer look at him during the NFL Combine.  Edmunds had 18.5 tackles for loss with 4.5 sacks as a sophomore and 14 tackles for loss with 5.5 sacks last season as a junior.

He also comes from solid gridiron bloodlines.  His father Ferrell Edmunds was a 2-time NFL pro bowler as a Tight End with the Dolphins, his oldest brother Trey Edmunds is a RB for the Saints and his other brother free safety Terrell Edmunds has also declared for the NFL draft from Virginia Tech.  Tremaine is the youngest of the 3.  NFL defensive coordinators are also excited about his potential to get much better.  Tremaine Edmunds is only 19-years-old.  But Tampa Bay picks at #7 with huge needs at offensive line, safety and edge rusher.

If Edmunds is off the board when the Bears are on the clock at pick #8, they should seriously think about taking a chance on an intriguing player, Arden Key.  Key had an explosive 2016 sophomore season by recording 14.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks.  Heading into the 2017 season, he was projected as a top 5 overall draft prospect.  But his stock has declined for 2 main reasons.  In the spring of 2017, Key left the team for personal reasons.  Professional scouts and the press was not informed about any specifics of why he temporarily left the team.  This caused the general public to question his work ethic and overall passion for the game.  Key has also fallen down draft boards due to missing 5 games for offseason shoulder surgery, mid-season finger surgery, a knee injury and his sack total dropped down to 4.

However, his 2017 season wasn’t a total disaster.  During a 3 game stretch towards the end of the season versus a few Associated Press top 20 schools (Auburn, Mississippi State and Alabama), Key recorded 20 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.  When healthy, Arden Key is a legitimate top 3 edge rusher draft prospect.

The big question mark that Ryan Pace must answer about Key is the off the field concerns.  Before the NFL Draft, Pace must interview Arden Key and get in touch with his family, coaches, teammates, etc… in order to find out if Key’s off the field issue was overblown or something that could jeopardize his NFL career.

If the Bears think Key is too risky, they could reach for Marcus Davenport or trade back to catch him.  The knock on Davenport is that he’s from the small University of Texas at San Antonio.  He recorded 6.5 sacks as a junior and 8.5 sacks as a senior.  He also had a solid performance at the Senior Bowl with a sack and fumble recovery for a touchdown.  Ryan Pace selected 3 small school guys during the 2017 draft but will he take it even further by selecting one in the 1st round this year?

After compiling an astounding 16.5 sacks as a junior in 2016, Harold Landry decided to not declare for the NFL Draft and returned for his senior year.  That decision turned out to be a big mistake.  In 2017, Landry’s sack number drastically dropped to 5 and he did not play in his teams last 5 games or the Senior Bowl due to an ankle injury.

Sam Hubbard is a big OLB that the Bears could also trade back for or snag in the 2nd round.  He didn’t produce gaudy stats at OSU by recording 8 tackles for loss with 3.5 sacks in 2016 and 13.5 tackles for loss and 7 sacks in 2017.  He played in the shadow of NFL pro bowler Joey Bosa’s little brother sophomore OLB Nick Bosa.  However, scouts have recognized Hubbard as a mid to late 1st round prospect.

What should the Bears do to address their need for an Edge Rusher/OLB?  They’ve got to find a viable side kick to Leonard Floyd and keep McPhee, Young and Acho for some solid veteran depth.  Like I said earlier, Pace must make a strong push for Ziggy Ansah but the Lions would be foolish not to franchise tag him.  If Ansah stays put in Detroit, Pace has to forget about reaching for a WR with the 8th pick and draft an edge rusher.  The Bears should draft the big, speedy, versatile and really young Tremaine Edmunds or Arden Key who may have some off the field issues to untangle.

Bulls Race to the Bottom

The Chicago Bulls trade of Nikola Mirotic to the New Orleans Pelicans for a few fringe bench players and most importantly a top 5 protected 1st round pick, accelerated the Bulls Race to the Bottom for more lottery balls in the 2018 NBA draft.  However, if you think General Manager John Paxson’s quest to have the worst squad is going to be easy, think again.  Here’s a look at the bottom 9 teams in the standings during the All-Star break.

Team W – L Percentage Games Back
30th Suns 18 – 41 .305
29th  Hawks 18 – 41 .305
28th  Mavs 18 – 40 .310 0.5
27th  Magic 18 – 39 .316 1
26th  Kings 18 – 39 .316 1
25th  Grizzlies 18 – 38 .321 1.5
24th  Nets 19 – 40 .322 2
23rd  Bulls 20 – 37 .351 3
22nd Knicks 23 – 36 .390 5

You can see the Bulls must become better at being bad as they currently have the 8th worst record in the league.  This race to the bottom will need a photo finish as only 3 games separate the worst 8 teams in the NBA.  The new NBA draft lottery reform does not go into effect until the 2019 draft.  Therefore, bad teams will try to take advantage of their 2018 draft lottery odds before significant changes are implemented next season.   Don’t be surprised if you see some of the worst teams sitting their best players and exaggerating their injuries in order to collect more losses for more lottery balls.

So, exactly who are the NBA’s worst teams racing for?  At this moment, the top 5 2018 draft prospects are:

#5 Trae Young Oklahoma Sooners, 6’2”, 180 – He leads the nation in scoring by putting up 30ppg.  Some people think he’s a shoot first and don’t ask questions later type of guy but he also leads the nation in assist by dishing out 9apg.  He has been compared to Stephan Curry due to his knack for getting hot from several feet behind the 3-point line.  Teams may shy away from Young because he will take some crazy shots, his defense is subpar and he looks shorter than his listed 6’2” measurable.  However, the guy is only a 19-year-old freshman and has plenty of time to improve.

How does Trae Young fit with the Bulls?  Bulls fans may think that Chicago should steer clear from Young since they already have Kris Dunn.  However, their attributes can complement each other, since Dunn is an awesome defender with a pass first mentality.

#4 Michael Porter Jr. Missouri Tigers 6’10”, 215This kid had a chance to be the number one overall pick before being out for the season after injuring his back during the first game of the season.  He has been compared to Kevin Durant due to his length, athleticism, shooting and dribbling ability at the small forward position.  But his draft position depends on his recovery from microdiscectomy surgery on his back.  “The most famous recent example of a basketball player to undergo a microdiscectomy is Dwight Howard.  Howard had the procedure done in 2012 before he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers (SBNation, Ricky O’Donnell, 2017).”  Lets take a look at Dwight Howard’s numbers before and after surgery.

  • Before Surgery 2004 – 2012 – 18.5 points, 13 rebounds & 2.1 blocks
  • After Surgery 2012 – present – 15.7 points, 12 rebounds & 1.6 blocks

You can see Howard’s stats did decrease but not too much for teams to be scared to make Porter Jr a top 5 pick.

How does Michael Porter Jr fit with the Bulls?  Perfectly, if he fully recovers from back surgery.  Throw Denzel Valentine on the bench and plug Porter Jr right there at small forward next to NBA all rookie 1st team lock Lauri Markkanen with Dunn and Zach LaVine holding down the guard positions.

#3 Luka Doncic Real Madrid, 6’8”, 225 At the moment, this Slovenian prospect is averaging 16 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds in just 24 minutes a game.  He’s a big tall 19-year-old combo guard with good vision and scoring ability.  The knock on him is the bust potential that surrounds high profile international draft prospects.  Since 2009, only 7 international players have been selected in the top 5 of the NBA draft and the results have been underwhelming.

Player Draft Year Draft Position Rookie Year Team Home Country
Ricky Rubio 2009 #5 Timberwolves Spain
Enes Kanter 2011 #3 Jazz Switzerland
Jonas Valanciunas 2011 #5 Raptors Lithuania
Dante Exum 2014 #5 Jazz Australia
Kristaps Porzingis 2015 #4 Knicks Latvia
Mario Hezonja 2015 #5 Magic Croatia
Dragan Bender 2016 #4 Suns Bosnia

There’s a few decent rotational players on this list but Kristaps Porzingis is the only and will always be the only all-star caliber player on the chart above.  I guess that’s why they call him “The Unicorn”.  Luka Doncic must defy some negative high international draft pick odds in order to live up to the hype.

How does Luka Doncic fit with the Bulls? Doncic is a PG/SG but at 6’8” he’s big enough to guard small forwards.  He’ll fit right into ‘HoiBall’ with his solid passing and shooting ability.

#2 Marvin Bagley III Duke Blue Devils, 6’11”, 234 – Bagley is relentless on the boards at the power forward position and can finish with either hand after maneuvering with his decent post-game.  The big question with Bagley heading into the draft is, can he shoot the ball with efficiency outside the paint?  He’s currently shooting 35% from 3-point range and 62% from the free throw line.  He must continue to improve his shooting ability because he’s probably not going to be able to bully NBA big men for offensive rebounds like he’s doing in college.

How does Marvin Bagley III fit with the Bulls?  At 6’11” and 234 pounds, he’ll be a slightly undersized center next to Markkanen.  But he’s still growing at age 19 and will hit the weight room.  Plus most NBA teams are embracing that small ball, so he shouldn’t have much trouble during his transition to the pros.

#1 Deandre Ayton Arizona Wildcats, 7’1”, 250 – I’ll be shocked if this guy is not the #1 overall pick.  He’s a true center with an array of post moves and an excellent shooting touch from inside the paint all the way to the 3-point line.  Despite being double teamed nearly every time he touches the ball, he’s averaging 19 points, shooting 61% from the field, 74% from the Free throw line and 34% from 3-point range.  Teams will be terrified to pass on him at the very top of the draft due to his potential to have an impact similar to Karl Anthony-Towns and/or Joel Embiid.

How does Deandre Ayton fit with the Bulls?  Perfect replacement for Robin Lopez.  You can let Ayton work opponents in the post, pass out of double teams to an open Markkanen, pick & roll or pick & pop.  If Ayton can develop solid defensive awareness and continue to improve on his offensive talents, he’ll be a perennial all-star.

The Bulls will continue their race to the bottom of the NBA standings but like I illustrated earlier, they’ve got some serious competitors.  Over a third of the league’s general managers are deluding their rosters as much as possible to gain more lottery balls.  Time will tell who’s the best at losing.

Fake All-Stars

Paul George 22 points, 5 boards and league leading 2.2 steals per game and Ben Simmons 16 points, 7 boards, 7 assists and 2 steals per game should have earned them a 1st ballot all-star selection.  The head coaches vote for the guys that come off the bench in the all-star game and they clearly put too much emphasis on players who play on teams high up in the NBA standings over players who are performing better.

Should the coaches really be giving Draymond Green a ton of credit for averaging 7 assist a game by passing to 3 of the best shooters/scorers in NBA history? Playing with sharp shooter Klay Thompson and a pair of MVPs (Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant) will keep his assist numbers inflated.  His 8 boards and 1 block a game is decent but 11 points per game is well below all-star status.  It’s funny how people overrate Green and feel obligated to put 4 Warriors on the all-star team because they have the NBA’s best record.  While in 1996, a historic 72 – 10 Bulls team, arguably the best team in NBA history only had two all-stars (Jordan & Pippen), while hall of famer Dennis Rodman was slapped with some snubbery and left at the crib.

Al Horford is another guy who should be sitting at home watching the all-star festivities in Los Angeles rather than participating in them. His 5 assist per game as a power forward is good, 8 boards a game is decent but 13 points per game is not enough for 1st ballot all-star status.  Horford is currently 40th in the Eastern Conference in points per game.  If you’re going to be an all-star while averaging a mediocre amount of points then you’ve got to be exceptional at another aspect of the game.

And that brings me to another player who should have been selected over Horford, if the coaches were hell-bent on continuing their foolery by slighting Ben Simmons simply because he’s a rookie. Andre Drummond is having an excellent season leading the league in rebounds by averaging 15 a game while also averaging 15 points.  Simmons and Drummond have undoubtedly been outperforming Horford but the coaches will rationalize their decision because the 76ers and Pistons are fighting for a playoff spot while the Celtics had the best record in the East at the time of the voting.

But the coaches need to wake up and realize that there have been some teams that had excellent regular season records or even won the championship with only one all-star. The 1993-94 Rockets won the championship with Hakeem Olajuwon as their only all-star and the 2010-11 Bulls had the NBA’s best record but Derrick Rose was their only all-star.

It would be great if the coaches could stop feeling like they’ve got to select ‘Fake All-Stars’ just because they play on a team at or close to the top of the NBA standings.  It’s true that Paul George loss more games than Draymond Green and Ben Simmons loss more games than Al Horford.  However, George and Simmons’ performances has been much better the Green and Horfords’ and they deserved that 1st ballot all-star spot.

Why Did ‘They’ Help the Patriots?

At the beginning of the 4th quarter, the New England Patriots were struggling against the Jaguars 3rd ranked defense while trailing 20 – 10 in the AFC Championship game.  Therefore, Bill Belichick and friends resorted to some trickery to gain some momentum.  Tom Brady threw a lateral to wide receiver Danny Amendola then he passed the ball across the field by the line of scrimmage to running back Dion Lewis.  The trick play worked, as Lewis had some blockers in front of him and ran 20 yards up the field as the Gillette Stadium crowd blustered with excitement.  But the Pat’s fans were silenced when Jacksonville’s phenomenal linebacker Myles Jack tackled Lewis, forced him to fumble, recovered the fumble and began running for a touchdown with no Patriots around to stop him.

In that moment, it looked like New England’s reign on top of the football world would end. It looked like the young Jaguars would take a 27 – 10 lead on the Patriots in the 4th quarter to give themselves a legitimate shot at their 1st Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.  But the trickiness would not end with the Patriots play calling as the referee blew the play dead while Myles Jack was running down the sideline.  Jack was highly upset about his opportunity to score being taken away due to the unnecessary stoppage of play by the referee.

The only explanation that one could give in defense of that ref’s blunder is that maybe he thought Jack was down by contact after tackling Dion Lewis before he rose up to run for a score. However, that referee should have let the play continue then by rule he would have reviewed the replay after Jack scored, since all turnovers and touchdowns are automatically reviewed.

This play was the turning point of the game as the Jaguars went 3 and out after having a potential touchdown taken away from them. Danny Amendola scored 2 touchdowns to the delight of the refs to put New England up 24 – 20 with just under 3 minutes left.  Unfortunately for Jaguar fans, Blake Bortles could not orchestrate a touchdown drive to send them to Super Bowl LII.  Instead of jogging off the field like most refs do after the final play, a referee made sure to congratulate Tom Brady as he made it to his 8th Super Bowl.

But the question remains unanswered. Why Did ‘They’ Help the Patriots?  Belichick and Brady has the best NFL dynasty of all-time and teams need to be damn near perfect to beat them.  The Patriots need help like a shark needs help catching a baby seal!  When that referee prematurely blew the whistle during Myles Jack fumble recovery return, he unintentionally or intentionally (We’ll never truly know) helped continue the Patriots domination of the NFL.

3rd Most Disappointing 2017 Team Seattle Seahawks

Before the kickoff of the 2017 regular season: Seattle earned playoff berths in 5 consecutive seasons, with 2 Super Bowl appearances and 1 Super Bowl ring.  Plus, all of their heavy hitters were back to make another championship run.  This team was stacked with household names: Michael Bennett, Jimmy Graham, Richard Sherman, Doug Baldwin, Bobby Wagner, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and top tier QB Russell Wilson.

Also, Seattle’s AFC West rivals were looking bad and mediocre coming into 2017.  Arizona was coming off an underachieving season after winning under 10 games and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2012.  The 49ers 2016 season was one that San Francisco would love to forget as they only won 2 games in Chip Kelly’s first and last season as head coach.  The Rams were coming off a 4 win season, had not made the playoffs since 2004, Jeff Fisher was fired for the youngest head coach in NFL history in 31 year old Sean McVay and Jared Goff was looking like a bust.  Comedian HaHa Davis would say, “Seattle’s quest to win another NFC West crown is going to be a breeze…”

Week 13 vs Eagles: The Seahawks were having a decent season with 7 wins and 4 losses but a huge test was coming to CenturyLink Field in Seattle as the red hot 10 – 1 Eagles were arriving with MVP candidate Carson Wentz and that smothering Philly defense.  In the 3rd quarter, the Eagles had the ball down 10 – 3 facing 2nd and goal to go at the 6 yard line.  The phenomenal Carson Wentz decided to scrabble up the middle for a touchdown but Legion of Boom safety Earl Thomas forced Wentz to fumble the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.  That huge play led to a 47 yard bomb pass from Wilson to Doug Baldwin to contribute to a 17 – 3 Seattle lead.  Those sequence of plays is the main reason why the Soaring Eagle’s 9 game winning streak came to an end on that Sunday night.

Russell Wilson was magnificent versus Fletcher Cox and that elite defense by throwing for 227 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.  Also, The Seahawk defense contributed with an excellent performance despite losing Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor to season ending injuries.  The Seahawk defense recorded 3 sacks, 2 takeaways and held the Eagles to their least amount of points scored under Carson Wentz in the season.

Weeks 14 – 16 Getting Kicked Out, Blown Out and Bizarre: It seemed like Seattle was hell-bent on forming another playoff push but they would lose 3 out of their next four games.  They followed that dominating victory over the Eagles with a loss in Jacksonville and lost their cool at the end of that game as Michael Bennett and Quinton Jefferson were ejected.  The Seahawks followed that loss by getting annihilated 42 – 7 by the surprising Rams in Seattle with the 12th Man crew watching in disbelief.

However, the Hawks bounced back from that humiliating loss by pulling an upset in Dallas to spoil Ezekiel Elliot’s return from his 6 game suspension.  But despite earning a victory over the Cowboys, television cameras caught Seahawk’s safety Earl Thomas entering bizarre land by trying to convince the Cowboys to sign him up.  After the game, Earl Thomas chased down Cowboy’s coach Jason Garret and said, “Come get me.”  Now that had to be extremely disappointing for Seahawk fans to see.  Even after a win, things were looking discouraging for Seattle but they could rectify everything in the final regular season game versus the mediocre 7 – 8 Arizona Cardinals in Seattle.

Week 17 vs Cardinals: Seattle knew a loss in their season finale against Arizona and their backup QB Drew Stanton would eliminate them from the playoffs.  The rowdy 12th Man crowd was stunned as the Cardinals jumped out to a 20 – 7 halftime lead.  Russell Wilson’s offense was dominated as the only Seattle score in the 1st half came off a 99 yard Tyler Lockett kick return touchdown.

But the Seahawks wouldn’t go quietly in the night as they erased that Arizona lead after Wilson threw a perfect 29 yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin to put Seattle up 24 – 23.  On the ensuing possession, the Cardinals had the ball with 6 minutes left in the ballgame.  They faced a 3rd and 7 from their own 17 yard line then Stanton threw an incomplete pass to JJ Nelson as Seattle’s 12th Man could feel another playoff berth coming.  But wait… roughing the passer on Bobby Wagner to deliver the 1st down to the Cardinals.  That penalty was an immaculate representation of the Seahawks season as they led the NFL in penalties per game.  That egregious penalty led to a 42 yard field goal by Phil Dawson to give Arizona a 26 – 24 lead with 2 minutes and 20 seconds to left.

Seattle fought back with big yardage receptions by Jimmy Graham and Doug Baldwin to put the Seahawks in field goal range with 20 seconds left.  But Blair Walsh’s 48 yard field goal sailed wide right and assured that the Seahawks would be home for the playoffs for the first time since the 2011 season.

Where do they go from here?  The intimidation of Seattle’s raucous 12th Man crowd at CenturyLink Field has subsided as the Seahawks lost half of their games at home (their most losses since 2011).  The Hawks still hasn’t recovered from Marshawn ‘Beast Mode’ Lynch’s decision to leave the team after being shunned by Pete Carroll in their infamous failure to hand him the ball at the goal line in the 2015 Super Bowl.  And Eddie Lacy as his replacement was an epic fail, as he only played in 9 games and gained only 19.8 yards per game.

The Seahawks tried to make offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell the scapegoat by firing him at the end of the season.  But Seattle needs to give a long critical look at general manager John Schnieder.  The Seahawks was the 3rd worse team in the NFL in QB hits allowed and Russell Wilson led his squad in rushing yards.  If Schnieder and friends wants to decrease the incredible amount of hits Russell Wilson takes, they will find some solid offensive linemen and legitimate running backs through free agency and the draft to lighten load for their franchise quarterback.
